songs from: hush the wild horses

Hush The Wild Horses
by Rachel Harrington

All the mustangs headed for high ground
And the west was up in flame
I was lonely as a mountain
Then you whispered my name

And you lay down
You lay down
You lay down
In my bed
And you hush the wild horses
In my head

Some storms will spook the horses
Send em running through the squall
Some years seem meant to break a man
But you broke my fall

And you lay down
You lay down
You lay down
In my bed
And you hush the wild horses
In my head

Child Of God
by Rachel Harrington

Out in back of my house
There down on the ground
He took hold of my hand
Did not make a sound

He pressed a fingertip
Up against my lips
He said it would not hurt
Started with a kiss

His hand up my skirt
Could not catch my breath
My knees began to shake
Scared me half to death

He took hold of my wrist
As if in a dream
My thoughts began to twist
In what he did to me

Am I not your child
Am I not your little girl
In this garden grown wild
In this Eden unfurled
Am I just your little plaything
Am I just your little dog
Just a servant of favor
Just a child of god

Out in back of my house
There down on the ground
He took hold of my hand
Did not make a sound

Just a girl of 8 years old
I didn’t know what to do
But I prayed Jesus did
And he would see me through

Am I not your child
Am I not your little girl
In this garden grown wild
In this Eden unfurled
Am I just your little plaything
Am I just your little dog
Just a servant of favor
Just a child of god

I Meant To Go To Memphis
by Rachel Harrington

I meant to go to Memphis
But first I found cocaine
She was waiting
Like a lost friend
In the rain

I meant to go to Memphis
But I passed through Baton Rouge
I was empty
She had whiskey
And the blues

Places never grieve
They just go up in flame
Lovers never leave
They only change their name

I meant to write to you
But Austin took me in
Just a place I went to
Waiting for the end to
Begin

Places never grieve
They just go up in flame
Lovers never leave
They only change their name
What I’ve come to believe
Leaves me no one else to blame

I meant to find myself
But who I was passed on
No letter goodbye
No farewell graveside
Just gone
No letter goodbye
No farewell graveside
Just gone

I meant to go to Memphis
But first I found cocaine

The Barn
by Rachel Harrington

They finally tore down that old barn along the highway
It’s been falling down since my mom was 17
Where she and her high school sweetheart
Took their shirts off in the dark
She wanted more but he kissed her
And said he’d never go that far
Not yet

He enlisted in the Army on the day he turned 18
And don’t you know he made the finest soldier you ever seen
On the day he was shipping out
His mama held his hand
She said I wish you didn’t want to go
You don’t have to be a man
Not yet

At night he dreams he’ll be by her side
He holds her little wallet picture so tight

It was hot day in July when the phone rang
She don’t remember now exactly what was said
All she heard was the voice inside her head
There’d be no wedding day
No picket fences, no wedding ring
No Mrs., no baby swing
No flowers all in bloom
No bride’s bouquet, no soldier groom
The future fell before her eyes
Oh no she cried, oh no
Not yet

We took a drive out past the farm along the highway
40 years come and gone and now that barn is too
Looking out the window
She smiled and she said
Honey, you should love with all your heart
Baby you should make that bet
Cuz no matter what
Someday a memory is all that you’ll have left
Oh but I still remember
The day that we first met
And I have this flame in my heart
And it hasn’t gone out yet
Not yet

They finally tore down that old barn along the highway
It’s been falling down since my mom was 17

Drinking About You
by Rachel Harrington

When you walked through the door
I dropped to the floor
To pick up my heart where it lay busted

Before you even spoke
I was always already broken
My heartache done and dusted

Honey you came along
Like an old country song
My lust like a match and you struck it

Drinking about you
Think I’m about to
Fall so hard I don’t come back
Cuz even though I’m wasted
You know I can taste it
A future far from my past

You stole my heart
In two seconds flat
And baby I’ll drink to that

Drinking about you
Think I’m about to
Fall so hard I don’t come back
Cuz even though I’m wasted
You know I can taste it
Baby I ain’t ever coming back

Drinking about you
Think I’m about to
Fall so hard I don’t come back
Cuz even though I’m wasted
You know I can taste it
A future far from my past
And baby I’ll drink to that

Drop Zone
by Rachel Harrington

C-130 rollin down the strip
Airborne daddy on a one way trip
Mission unspoken, destination unknown
Don’t even know if we’re ever going home
If I die on the drop zone
Box me up and ship me home

Stand up, hook up, shuffle to the door
Jump right out and count to four
If my main don’t open wide
I’ve got a reserve by my side
And if that one should fail me too
Well look out below, I’m a’comin through

If I die on the ol drop zone x4
If I die on the drop zone
Box me up and ship me home

Bury speakers all around my head
So I can rock to the grateful dead
Bury speakers all around my toes
So I can rock to the rolling stones

C-130 rollin down the strip
Airborne daddy on a one way trip
Mission unspoken, destination unknown
Don’t even know if we’re ever goin home
If I die on the drop zone
Box me up and ship me home

If I die on the ol drop zone x4
If I die on the drop zone
Box me up and ship me home
If I die on the drop zone
Box me up and ship me home

Susanna
by Rachel Harrington & Mandolin Hooper

This old bus could drive itself along this highway
But this old guitar’ll need a tune before the show
I just wish you could be here right beside me
It gets lonesome being out on the road

But this LA freeway is always good for dying
Oh Sis she done rosined up her bow
Sometimes a song is only good for crying
When leaving’s a long way to go

Susanna don’t you cry babe
It won’t be long til I’m home
Susanna don’t you cry babe
It won’t be long til I’m gone

Townes is up there waiting up to greet us
With that mischief grin and mad dog margaritas
He needed you, but did he ever need us?
Don’t matter now, he’s got you, and I’m on my way

Cuz this LA freeway is only good for dying
I’m hitting this soldier’s joy hard as I can
Gotta little luck left but ain’t for lack of trying
Gotta get back to being in your arms again

Susanna don’t you cry babe
It won’t be long til I’m home
Susanna don’t you cry babe
It won’t be long til I’m gone

Save Yourself
by Rachel Harrington

Just a boy on a bike with a light in his eye
He leapt at life like it got him high
A Superman smile with a superhero cape
Always looking to save the day

Now he’s been wandering the backstreets of life
For so long now it just don’t seem right
Just a baby boy in the blink of an eye
Grown to a man just trying to stay high

There you are
Another shooting star
Reaching down in the pocket of the interstate
Driving home like it’s too late
And you’ve been running around like a long lost friend
Meeting your maker in every dead end
Kicking down doors and then
Just walking away
Maybe you’ll save yourself someday

Living on the street, without a name
No bad guys to beat, no one to blame
Just an empty plate and burning spoon
As folks walk by in their name-brand shoes

He’s a hell of a friend to those in need
Give you the shirt off his back, literally
But people look through him, they don’t give a damn
He grew up to be the Invisible Man

My heart’s on your sleeve, my blood’s in your chest
When you can’t eat, baby, I can’t rest
Like you’re still just a messy haired, messed up kid
But I can’t save you now like I always did

So there you are
Another shooting star
Reaching down in the pocket of the interstate
Driving home like it’s too late
And I’m running around like a long lost friend
Meeting my maker in every dead end
Kicking down doors and then
Just walking away
Cuz I can’t save you now
I tried everything that I know how
So maybe you’ll save yourself
Instead of always trying to save somebody else
Baby, maybe you’ll save yourself someday

Mekong Delta
by Rachel Harrington

In that picture on the shelf
I was just a boy myself
Just a boy on a bike with a light in his eyes
But that boy there that you see
Ain’t the man I came to be
And I know now he won’t be back again

Left my heart in the Mekong delta
Never felt a push or a shove
But it’s somewhere out there with the dog tags and whiskey
Somewhere out there with the boys and the blood
And I wanna go home
But I don’t know which way to go
When my dreams are the shape
Of a heart-shaped hollow

And his mother at his grave said
Now that my boy is dead
All that I have left is a picture in a frame
But that boy there that you see
Ain’t the man that came back to me
And I know now he won’t be back again

Left my heart in the Mekong delta
Never felt a push or a shove but it’s
Somewhere out there with the dog tags and whiskey
Somewhere out there beating still
And I wanna go home
But I don’t know which way to go
When my dreams are the shape
Of a heart-shaped hollow

Left my heart in the Mekong Delta

Get Out While You Still Can
by Rachel Harrington

I read the news in the paper today
My liquid courage had just up and walked away
My addiction was convicted, they’ll be fair hell to pay
Said the judge from his chair and heard myself say

Oh your honor on my honor
I know not what I have done
Took the devil for a dreamer
Woke up with a smoking gun
Now I’m headed for the highway
Like a leper on the run
While I struggle to remain

So goodbye to the ball and chain
Goodbye to the silo grain
All the fields went up in flame
While I was busy getting high

Goodbye to the radio
Goodbye to the friends you know
They left a long time ago
But we never said goodbye

Now I’m headed for the highway
With a soldier by my side
And we’re goin down to Graceland
Gonna get me one last ride
After looking for the answer
In the bottom of the amber
While I struggle to remain

So goodbye to the rodeo queen
Goodbye to the music scene
Goodbye to the rock and roll bands
With the sequins and the spurs

Goodbye to the honkytonks
The pedal steel, the bucking broncs
The best songs made have all been played
Ain’t nothing left to say

Goodbye to all my friends
Goodbye that’s how this ends
Sorry if I did offend
That’s just the way it goes

Goodbye to all my plans
Goodbye to my last stand
Hand me down my walking cane
Gonna get out while I can

Get out get out get out
Oh get out while you still can
Get out get out get out
Oh get out while you still can
Get out get out get out
Oh get out while you still can
Get out get out get out
Oh get out while you still can

If Wishes Were Horses
by Rachel Harrington

I’d give the snow back to winter
Give the flowers back to spring
Give the ocean to the rivers, I’d do anything
For a diamond in a coal sack
A needle in a haystack
Oh I would send the rain back to the clouds on a string

If wishes were horses
If dreams came true
If mysterious forces headed my way from you
I would burst like lightning
I would break like the day
If wishes were horses I’d be riding away

My stallion would come to me
Break out of his stall
To ride me through fire, through wind, through squall
To give back to the night sky
The stars as they fall
Give back the howling to the wolves when they call

If wishes were horses
If dreams came true
Lighting like torches the way home to you
I would burst like lightning
I would break like the day
If wishes were horses I’d be riding away

The dapples and grays
The roans and the bays
All wishes and prayers and dreams that someday
You will be in my arms
And I’ll hear you say
That wishes are horses as we’re riding away

If wishes were horses
If dreams shone through
If mysterious forces made true love come true
We would burst like lightning
We would break like the day
If wishes were horses we’d be riding away
If wishes were horses we’d be riding away

Makin' Our House a Honkytonk
by Rachel Harrington

Baby, can't ya see
I'm missin you lovin me
You're always dancing down at the bar
I've tried everything I know of
Beg and plead, push and shove
I know this might sound bizarre

Sittin here drinkin beer
I was wishin you was near
And suddenly it come to me
I know how much you love it
How you wish you had more of it
So I went on a shopping spree

I'm makin our house a honkytonk
You can dance all night that's right just wait and see
Invite all your friends
And you won't have to make amends
‘Cause at the end of the night you’ll be home with me

Peanut shells on the floor
Hope you like the new decor
Antlers and neon signs
Ain't got no caviar
Just popcorn and PBR
Your credit card never declines

Pulltabs, shitkickers
Disco balls, bumperstickers
And we never pour too much foam
I don't wanna be hatin'
So I been redecoratin'
But you should feel right at home

'Cause I'm makin our house a honkytonk
You can dance all night that's right just wait and see
Invite all your friends
And you won't have to make amends
‘Cause at the end of the night you’ll be home with me

Oh, oh, oh we got a red hot jukebox
Country music on the rocks
Baby just me and you
Playin Hank and Loretta
Oh it don't get any better
And I think we're gonna make it through

'Cause I'm makin our house a honkytonk
You can dance all night that's right just wait and see
Invite all your friends
And you won't have to make amends
‘Cause at the end of the night you’ll be home with me

He's My Man
by Rachel Harrington

All your letters and your phone calls begging him
You just a-scratching on the door wanna get back in
I know it’s cold outside and honey that’s a shame
But you know there’s only one person you got to blame
You’re a lying cheating no good used to be
Now all yr gonna get is a piece of me

He’s my man
He’s my man
He’s my man
Leave him alone

You just a-cattin round the yard tryin to pick a dog fight
But you know I got the bark and darlin I got the bite
I can find you a man if that’s what you need
But this one’s taken honey yes indeed
I’m gonna break every part that doesn’t bend
So come on girls help me sing it again

He’s my man
He’s my man
He’s my man
Go get your own

Love Him or Leave Him to Me
by Rachel Harrington

There was a time way back when
He was in love with you
And somehow you managed to fool him
Into saying I do
But he got wise to your disguise
And the lawyers had their say
Now here you come sniffin around
Like it was yesterday

Love him or leave him for good this time
Your cheating ways and two-timin heart
No longer tow the line
And if you think I’m gonna let him go
You’re as wrong as you can be
So just love him or leave him to me

As a woman I understand
Loving a man can be hard
But it’s getting though these things that make
A person who they are
Temptations do abound it’s true
But a heart is no play thing
Only you can be faithful to
Your golden wedding ring

Love him or leave him for good this time
Your cheating ways and two-timin heart
No longer tow the line
And if you think I’m gonna let him go
You’re as wrong as you can be
So just love him or leave him to me

Wedding Ring Vacation
by Rachel Harrington

Well a wedding ring
Is a valuable thing
Don’t get me wrong
A wife is proud
To be endowed
With an emblem of love so string
But if her man starts growing cold
And the marriage turns to ice
You can bet she’s gonna wanna sell that ring
At the highest offered price

She’ll take a wedding ring vacation
Makin the best of a bad situation
Puttin that heartache on probation
Gonna have some fun
Let love go to liquidation
No more insufficient fundelation
Gonna get right down to recreation
Under the sun

Well I took my gown
To the other side of town
Sold it to a store
His tux is doin ok
Up on ebay
In a bidding war
Got me an ocean
Of suntan lotion
A tropical beach delight
So keep the hot tub hot & the cocktails coming
I’m a gonna be high all night

I’m on a wedding ring vacation
Makin the best of a bad situation
Puttin this heartache on probation
Gonna have some fun
Let love go to liquidation
No more insufficient fundelation
Gonna get right down to recreation
Under the sun

I'll Show You Mine
by Rachel Harrington

The body is holy it’s true
The body is a temple they say
When I laid my eyes on you
I was born again that day

I wanna waltz you across the dance floor
I wanna waltz you the whole night through
A body so fine, laid out on the line
If you show me yours, I’ll show you mine

O the heart is a tender thing
She warbles and she cries
She can break like nothing you’ve seen
And then she’ll spread her wings and fly

I wanna waltz you across the dance floor
I wanna waltz you the whole night through
Beating in time, our two hearts entwine
If you show me yours, I’ll show you mine

I wanna waltz you across the dance floor
I wanna waltz you the whole night through
Your dreams and mine, to the end of the line
If you show me yours, I’ll show you mine

I wanna dance with you my whole life through
If you show me yours, I’ll show you mine

Nothin to Do But You
by Rachel Harrington

I got nothin to do today but you
I got no one to see but you and me
I’m gonna bring you breakfast in bed
We got a long long day ahead
'Cause I got nothin but nothin to do today but you

When you want a taste you come and get it
You know you want my love and baby I know you won’t regret it

I got no place to be but on your knee
I got no where I got to go, you steal the show
Your kisses are like wine
I wanna stay drunk all the time
I got nothin but nothin to do today but you

When you want a taste you come and get it
You know you want my love and baby I know you won’t regret it

Oh baby you know it’s true
I love your heart and your soul and your body too
And I got nothing but nothing to do today but you
We might just tear this room in two
And I gotta say honey babe I don’t mind if we do
'Cause I got nothing but nothing to do today but you
No I got nothing but nothing to do today but you

Hippie in My House
by Rachel Harrington

There's a hippie in my house
I found him on the street
With shaggy hair and earrings
And stinky bare feet
He was lookin really dirty
Like a sickly little pup
So I thought I'd take him in a while
And try to clean him up
There’s a hippie, there’s a hippie in my house

Gazin' at my taxidermy
He said we're all one
And then he put his rainstick
Next to my shotgun
He sat down in half lotus
Started reading tarot cards
And there's some funny lookin' plants
Growing out there in the yard
There’s a hippie, there’s a hippie in my house

He sings peace and love, man
The Tao of Poof
This land is your land too

Well he bought a solar panel
Built an entire wind farm
Ordered a composting toilet
Said somethin' about do no harm
The bills were piling up
The costs proved to be titanic
Plus everything we buy now
It has to be organic
There’s a hippie, there’s a hippie in my house

Costs being what they were
Well I started a museum
I figured open up the front door
Let the tourists come in and see him
I put up a neon sign
And charge five bucks a head
With admission you get to smoke a bowl
And even take home a dread
There’s a hippie, there’s a hippie in my house

When the protesters came
Trying to save their kin
They was all wearin' t-shirts that said
Free The Hippie Within
Camera crews and TV news
A-bangin' down my door
The government intervened
Hell they even stopped the war
There’s a hippie, there’s a hippie in my house

And they sing peace and love, man
The Tao of Poof
This land is your land too

Well I started feeling bad
About the whole snafu
Til my hippie took my hand
And said what would Bob do?
I knew I had to let him go
I said que sera
So we said goodbye and held hands
And sang Kumbaya
Now there’s a hippie, there’s a hippie in my house
Now there’s a hippie, there’s a hippie in my house

I'd Like to Take This Chance
by Rachel Harrington

I go to church on Sunday
I always split my aces
I take my change in pulltabs
I cover all my bases

But when I laid my eyes on you
So help me god
I knew I had to take the risk
And bet against the odds

I’d like to take this chance to tell you just how I feel
I’d like to take this chance to show my love for you is real
I’m not the gambling kind, but as for this romance
I’d like to take this chance to say I’d like to take this chance

Everybody’s waiting
On that long shot win
Everybody’s waiting
For their ship to come in

I’m not the gambling kind
But as for this romance
I’d like to take this chance to say
I’d like to take this chance

House of Cards
by Rachel Harrington

I ain’t about to start preaching to the saved
I ain’t about to count the many hands I’ve played
I ain’t about to be taken by a fool
I ain’t aout to start playing by no rules

Been a long time coming, house of cards coming down
Been a long time coming, house of cards coming down

I ain’t about to let the dealer play my hand
I ain’t about to let the banker hold my land
I ain’t about to call a bet that I could steal
I ain’t about to spoil a good drink with a mea

Been a long time coming, house of cards coming down
Been a long time coming, house of cards coming down

Well Dutch said it would be easy
But we turned the river and I got played

He was a man of muscle, was a man of means
Was a dead man walking with a fistful of Queens
I bet the farm I didn’t have to lose
He laid his hand down to bad news

Been a long time coming, house of cards coming down
Been a long time coming, house of cards coming down

Here In My Bed
by Rachel Harrington

Somebody else will hold my hand
Somebody else will understand
Here in my bed, here in my bed

Somebody else will kiss these lips
Somebody else under these fingertips
Here in my bed, here in my bed

The same old stars, the same old moon
Shining down in the same old room
The same old 4th of July
The same old fires in the same old sky

Somebody else in the morning sun
Somebody else will make me come undone
Here in my bed, here in my bed

They’ll be somebody else in this old picture frame
Somebody else will whisper my name
Here in my bed, here in my bed

You can beg, you can plead
You can tell me I am all you’ll ever need

But there’ll be somebody else faithful and true
Somebody else and I know it won’t be you
Here in my bed, Here in my bed

Little Pink
by Rachel Harrington

Hey little pink, what do you think
You’re a long time making up your mind
I used to think you were the prettiest little thing
Ever the sun shone on

You can’t find love in a band of gold
His eyes be blue or brown
Til he’s at the top of the gallows
Crying babe come get me down

I never will marry no logging man
Or a man who drives a four horse team
I’d rather marry a railroad man
Who drives his wheels by steam

15 cents is all the money that I got
A dollar is all I crave
15 cents and some good ol morphine
To carry me to my grave

[Little Pink one a learned from a little duo called The Shiftless Rounders. They said they’d learned this song, which was a half-instrumental tune with a handful of lyrics, from some old man they met in the hills of West Virginia, who told them it was a traditional song. I took the Rounders version and reworked it, adding some of my own lyrics.]

Goodbye Amsterdam
by Rachel Harrington

When I get to Bristol, I’ll know where to go
Did you hear the owner Michael passed away
The folks down at the club
Will want to know how you’ve been
I know they they’ll ask but I don’t know what I’ll say

When I get to Brussels, I’ll think of the Louvre
And the three night we spent in Amsterdam
And how I would have killed you if you hadn’t been so sweet
Ih if we could just have stayed right there back then

So goodbye Barcelona
Goodbye Birmingham
Goodbye to Vienna
Goodbye Amsterdam
Goodbye you and me

By the time I get to Glasgow I’ll feel right at home
The rolling of the road settling in
And I’d have myself a good time if I didn’t have to
Say goodbye to you in every place we’ve been

So goodbye Barcelona
Goodbye Birmingham
Goodbye to Vienna
Goodbye Amsterdam
Goodbye you and me

You’ll Do
by Rachel Harrington

You’ll do the laundry
I’ll mow the lawn
You’ll do that thing you do
All night long
You ain’t Mr. Right
But you ain’t so wrong
Darlin, you’ll do

You’ll do the windows
I’ll trim the tree
You’ll do the dishes
And then you’ll do me
A frog with no curse
Oh I’ve done worse
So, darlin, you’ll do

You’ll do for later
You’ll do for now
You’ll do in a pinch
The kind of pinch I need and how
This love will bloom
Like rain follows the plow
Darlin, you’ll do

I’ve had my share
Of wishing for true love
I’ve made my prayers
To the lord above
She said, what you’re askin
No way, no how
So, darlin, you’ll do

Right here, right now
Is all that we ever knew
If you wanna contemplate the
Philosophical point of view
As for Einstein
One and one makes two
So, darlin, you’ll do

You’ll do for later
You’ll do for now
You’ll do in a pinch
The kind of pinch I need and how
This love will bloom
Like rain follows the plow
Darlin, you’ll do

[The wife of a good friend of mine said she had a great song idea but that if she wrote the song she’d end up divorced. So she gave me her idea with the promise I’d never tell anyone. “You’ll do”, she said. “You’re not amazing, you’re not ‘the one’, but you’re good enough. You’ll Do!” She ended up divorced anyway. But I’ve kept my promise. Which is why she doesn't have a co-write credit.]

He Started Building My Mansion In Heaven Today
by Rachel Harrington

O my savior is a carpenter
He’s building a home for me
Through pearly gates on streets of gold
In the holy city I’ll be

Just down the road from this earthly lane
No death or mourning or crying or pain
Just beyond the rise I see
Sweet eternity

He started building my mansion in heaven today
Hallelujah, hallelujah, amen
I feel it in my bones, I’ll soon be on my way
He started building my mansion in heaven today

My door is made of precious stone
Without a lock or key
Seven steps to the porch with a pretty view
Of the sea of Galilee

Just down the road from this earthly lane
No death or mourning or crying or pain
Just beyond the rise I see
My home waiting for me

He started building my mansion in heaven today
Hallelujah, hallelujah, amen
I feel it in my bones, I’ll soon be on my way
He started building my mansion in heaven today

You Don’t Know
by Rachel Harrington

What’s the wind like to the bird
What’s the good news, have you heard
You don’t know, you don’t know

Who makes the moon do pirouettes
Who forgives, or just forgets
You don’t know, you don’t know

You don’t know if it’s man or machine
If you should run or maybe just come clean
You don’t know, you don’t know

Where the seed blows before it stops
Where the rain’s been before it drops
You don’t know, you don’t know

When the blue sky will fade to black
When your enemies will attack
You don’t know, you don’t know

You don’t know what tomorrow will bring
A chamber of gas or a gold wedding ring
You don’t know, you don’t know

I’ve been reading tea leaves
Searching stars
Looking for answers
And I’ve just found one

How many breaths do we have left to take
How much love do you think we can make
You don’t know, you don’t know

You don’t know why the river starts to bend
Where it flows and how the story ends
You don’t know, you don’t know

Pretty Saro
by Rachel Harrington

When I came to this country in 18 and 43,
I saw many a fair lover but I never saw thee,
There’s one thing that grieves me and tortures my mind
That’s leaving my darling pretty saro behind

When I think of my saro, In dawn’s early light
She’ll always be crying as she was that poor night
When upon the banks she did call out for me
And I with my captain sailing far out to se

Oh captain my captain, I’m a man overboard
But nothing can save me, No anchor could hold
As my heart does wrench me across waters so wide
And bade me return for, my saro, my bride

O I dreamed I was the tall grass with her long legs in the glade
I dreamed I was a soldier and her love a blade
I dreamed I was a purdy flower out in the dell
That she plucked with her fingers as she thought of me well

Bury Me Close
by Rachel Harrington

She won the rose that night I met her
Under starlight so blue and love was all that I could hear

Bury me close beside her
I know in her arms I belong
My only true love
Oh you should have seen her dance

Where Are You
by Rachel Harrington

Where are you
Baby I don’t want to be here
Fireworks in my head
Missing you in my bed
Not loving you instead
Of loving you

Day is gone
Blue sky fading
Sparrows in the clouds
Singing a little song
The wind a lullabye
For you and I

Where are you
Baby I don’t want to be here
Fireworks in my head
Missing you in my bed
Not loving you instead
Of loving you

Spokane
[By my good friend, Art Hanlon. This is my reworking of his lyrics]

You sang to me last Sunday
Sang about that gold watch and chain
Now you’re driving back to Spokane
Tired of the wind and the rain

Met him back in Winslow
Dancing on the 3rd day of July
But he left me last December
On a night without a star in the sky

Followed him to Vantage
Found the place where he broke down
He was standing at the river
Looking out on empty ground

I said you know I love you
Was the whiskey made my words so cruel
He said if the whiskey did the talking
Whiskey did the loving too

He sang to me last Sunday
Sang about that gold watch and chain
Now he’s driving back to Spokane
Leaving me in the wind and the rain

Let Me Sleep In Your Arms Tonight
by Rachel Harrington

Let me sleep in your arms tonight, dear
Let me rest upon your shore
The only place i’m right as rain, dear
Where I long to be once more

Where the western plains and the fallen stars
Meet under the open sky
where the coyotes howl a lullabye
Let me sleep in your arms tonight

Where the wildflowers bloom and the mustangs roam
The prairies ocean wide
O the lord above has called you home
Let me sleep in your arms tonight

O bury my heart ‘neath the starlight
Let me sleep in your arms tonight

The Last Jubilee
by Rachel Harrington

Don’t be blue
If you don’t wake up today
Just pick up your harp and play
Don’t be blue

And it’s ok
If you don’t know how to sing
You’ll sound an angel to the King
No matter what you do

Cuz we got John and June in the backup choir
And Hank is drunk on love
Elvis he ain’t ever been higher
And we’ll be playing all night long

Don’t be blue
If you don’t wake up today
Just pick up your harp and play
In the last jubilee

Songs from: city of refuge

Karen Kane
by Rachel Harrington

A shovel, a pick, an axe and a hoe
Cast my lot with the Yukon gold
Pockets full of greed and lust
Angels in the devil's dust

Cross Quilkoot Pass with an old pack mule
Miners and men call me a fool
A woman like you shouldn't break no sweat
A woman like me just running to forget

Karen Kane come back again
The bed you left unmade is cold
Oh, that child, taken so young
A life unlived, a song unsung

Got me a job at old Dutch Kate's
Keep a deck stacked full of aces and eights
I keep every last dime on a two dollar dance
And fifteen cents on whiskey romance

Strut your stuff when you flash that loot
In your Mukluk shoes and your Makinaw suit
Pockets deep on a Klondike King
About enough to make a harlot sing

Karen Kane come back again
The bed you left unmade is cold
Oh, that child, taken so young
A life unlived, a song unsung

That midnight sun in Dawson town
Is all I want for a wedding gown
So give my best to Napoleon Jack
But him I ain't ever coming back

Karen Kane come back again
The bed you left unmade is cold
Oh, that child, taken so young
A life unlived, a song unsung

Housewife’s Lament
by Rachel Harrington

I wanna rock
I wanna roll
I want the devil at my front door
Come after me
Come after dark
Take my body and break my heart

Even the moon is falling
Even the stars at sea
Restless dreams are calling me
Everyone everywhere I see

Gazing out my window
Elbows on the sill
Kissing beneath the sun
Sweethearts just begun

I wanna rock
I wanna roll
I want the devil at my front door
Come after me
Come after dark
Break my body and take my heart

Even the moon is falling
Even the stars at sea
And there beneath the old oak tree
Sweethearts you and me

Truman
by Rachel Harrington & Zak Borden

He was an old man living on a mountainside
With a mint pink Cadillac he never took to ride
His wife of 30 years passed, he took his drink alone
After the death of a true love you no longer fear your own

Harry Truman, are you coming down?
Been a lonesome sermon on the mountain
Truman, must you have your way
Harry Truman, don't get blown away

We begged and pleaded your own life to save
'Cause when this mountain goes Spirit Lake will be your grave

Harry Truman, are you coming down?
Been a lonesome sermon on the mountain
Truman, must you have your way
Harry Truman, don't get blown away

Harry Truman, see him coming down
When that mountain sheds her sleeping nightgown
Children, there beyond the black
It's Truman on St. Helens in his mint pink Cadillac
Blazing from the ashes in his mint pink Cadillac

Carver
by Rachel Harrington

Maybe you don’t believe
In love the way i do
I’m just a simple fool
Stranger angels have spilled here i’m sure

And did you get what you
Wanted from this life even so
Well honey i don’t know
To win, to lose - what for if the world will forget us anyway

Maybe you don’t believe
In love the way i do
But darling this is where
A blue moon blooms as she begins brushing her hair

The Clearcut
by Rachel Harrington

Be careful where you lay
Memories abound in the grasses here

Be careful what you say
The alder remember that sweet summer day

Don't be fooled by the absence of my tongue

Angel Boy
by Rachel Harrington

Fare you well back home, back home
Fare you well back home

Angels at your dying bed
Fare you well back home
Fare you well back home

Angels moan and angels grieve
Fare you well back home
Angels grieve and angels moan
Fare you well back home, back home
Fare you well back home

Fare you well my angel boy
Fare you well back home
Fare you well my angel boy
Fare you well back home, back home
Fare you well back home
Fare you well back home

Bare bones, high wire
Under the big top
Circus lights shine
All for you
Catch me when I fall

Sunshine Girl
by Rachel Harrington

Sunshine girl, give me a whirl
Dance me around the sky
Paint your blues and pinks on my tongue
And raise me up through the darkest night

Sunshine girl, give me whirl
Spin me around the stars
Let your voice ease my pain
And sing me down to a harvest heart

Sunshine girl, you are my joy
Come shed your sweet light on this moonshine boy

Sunshine girl, give me a whirl
Dance me around the sky
Paint your blues and pinks on my tongue
And raise me up through the darkest night

Sunshine girl, you are my joy
Come shed your sweet light on this moonshine boy

Shoeless Joe
by Rachel Harrington

Never had no money, no place to go
‘til i left the corn fields of ohio
I was gonna get rich on this game i play
Make it to the big leagues and come back someday
Mama said don’t leave son now don’t you go
I said now you can hear me on the radio

She said hey joe say it ain’t so, tell me it ain’t true
Tears me up how you can do what you do
Throw away all this that belongs to you
And it don’t seem like you

The boys treated me real good, i can’t complain
Even they asked me to throw the game
Did my best i could but let a few get by
Press lit me up for that, made my momma cry
I left the courthouse with my good name
‘til a boy looked up at me, handing me my shame

He said hey joe say it ain’t so, tell me it ain’t true
Tears me up how you can do what you do
Throw away all this that belongs to you
And it don’t seem like you

[Pretty sure I’m the only chick songwriter to have ever gotten a mention in the sports section of the Chicago Tribune :-]

Blow ~ The Ballad of Bill Miner
by Rachel Harrington

1846, the year that i was born
Daddy died laying track on Northern Railroad
And it’s a back break – hell of a way to go –
Lay it inch by inch and they got 1200 miles left to go

Folks down at the Bureau say i ain’t got no claim
Man up the White House done gave it all away
Transcontinental – stand back, sit still –
And what Villard don’t get, young man, Weyerhaeuser will.

Whistle blow on the train tracks
Whistle blow on the train tracks
Whistle blow

Judge said 15 years, but i got out in ten
orth to the Columbia from the gates of San Quentin
And it’s a long haul – but look at me smile
‘Cause my life’s work ain’t done yet son, not by a mile

Whistle blow on the train tracks
Whistle blow on the train tracks
Whistle blow

Coming up on the tender, my mare is on the chase
Wanted dead or alive next time you see face
I’ll be a rich man and i’ll make you a deal
‘Cause what a rich man don’t give a righteous man will steal.

untitled
by Rachel Harrington

The well is deep with water
The well is deep, my son
The hills of green and luster
The glades of gold are spun

Our prayers are in the seedlings
Our dreams are in the sun
To the gates of eden reaching
'Til the harvest moon has come

Oh sins of greed and luster
Sins of sloth and shame
Abound themselves in infidels
As the tule to the rain

But a fairer day awaits you
When the lion shall lay down
For the son of a bootlegger’s daughter
Who was lost but now is found

The well is deep with water
The well is deep, my son
The hills of green and luster
The glades of gold are spun

Summer’s Gone
by Rachel Harrington

Hey ho, the night is long
Looks like it’s gonna rain
High above the mountain
Way upon the plain, son
Way upon the plain

Hey ho, the night is long
Devil’s in this place
Searching for  young girl
Gone without a trace, son
Gone without a trace

Hey ho, the night is long
Suffer you to roam
Summer went a’waltzing
Left without a home, son
Left without a home

Ain’t no fire, ain’t no flame
In these fields of pouring rain
Harvest time has come and gone
Still we all must carry on
The heart’ll bring you down, boy
The heart’ll bring you down

Hey ho, the river’s high
On the waterwheel
Floods’ll try to take her
Looks like she’s running still, son
Looks like she’s running still

Hey ho, the night is long
What’s wrong with you son
Mama come a'crying
Sounds like the evening’s done, boy
Sounds like the evening’s done

Ain’t no fire, ain’t no flame
In these fields of pouring rain
Harvest time has come and gone
Still we all must carry on
The heart’ll bring you down, boy
The heart’ll bring you down

Hey ho, don’t you cry
Ain’t like you’ve not been told
One thing that’s for sure now
This life’ll leave you cold, son,
This life’ll leave you cold

Halloween Leaves
by Rachel Harrington

For the way you fell alone
For the ripple of the stone
In the shallows of the shore
We’ve come to carve ourselves a home
For the way I believe you will someday
All my troubles fall away

For the coming of the snow
For the bitter winds that blow
Through the plains and through the pass
Through the chocolate lily grass
For the oak and the cottonwood a blind faith
As halloween leaves fall away

For the promise of the spring
For the light in everything
Still beneath the harvest moon
Hope does sleep, a savior soon
For the way I believe you will someday
All my troubles fall away
Halloween leaves fall away
Halloween leaves fall away

Walk to You
by Rachel Harrington

Oh this heart, if it weren’t for you
I’d lock it down i’d lock it good
Take the train out of the south
And watch the rain fall down
But in the meadow i can see
You and me there on the ground

And we might not make it back
And we might not make it through
Could be this one is the last
Time that we
Won’t have to see
Me walk away
I walk to you

For the fault line i can’t pave
And the waves come crashing through
In the midnight now
I hear your heart beat into mine
Got me under your skin
When the world is so unkind

And you know i’ll let you down
And we might not make it to
Time to walk
Down to the lake
Where I can wake
My dreams of you

With your head down in the road
You walked out in the rain
Nowhere you have to go
Nowhere you have to stay
Less than you’ve earned
In the price that you pay
But i can’t wait
I see your face, i see your face
I’ll be with you

I walk to you
